The Immigration Research Paper – You May be Surprised

If you were asked the question, “What is the fastest growing immigrant population in American today?” what would you answer? According to a recent study, 90% of Americans would answer Hispanic, Latino, or Mexican. And that 90% would be wrong. The fastest growing immigrant population right now is Asian. And much of it is illegal just as immigration from Latin America is. Because we deport so many Latin American illegals, and because illegal immigration has significantly slowed due to lack of jobs in America since the financial crisis, the net increase in immigration across the Mexican border is today at “0.” Many politicians, however, would have you believe otherwise.

Sticking to the Facts

The whole point of writing a research paper is to locate factual information and data to support a thesis on a topic. And if you are going to produce a research paper on immigration, you cannot use sources that do not provide accurate information. Such sources would include cable news channels, websites that have an obvious bias, and journals that are clearly partisan in their coverage of most issues. It will be difficult to find unbiased sources, but they are “out there.” There are many government-based agencies that track immigration statistics and provide realistic numbers and countries of origin; many Master’s theses and published dissertation on the topic can also provide factual information as well as resource material for you research. When you write a research paper on immigration, you need to be very careful to avoid the rhetoric, the partisan approaches, and the biases of unreliable sources.

Interesting Topics for an Immigration Research Paper

Immigration is so much more than just Latin America migration into the United States. While all of your classmates may be selecting topics based upon this, how about doing something different? You instructor will probably be happy to read something other than the same topics and theses. Here are some unique topics that might work for you:

  1. Why do the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and many large corporations want immigration reform laws that support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants? What is their stake in all of this?
  2. What is the fastest growing population of “anchor babies” in this country? What legislative proposals are attempting to amend the Constitution to prevent the practice of establishing anchor baby citizenship?
  3. How do specific communities successfully “hide” illegal immigrants within their communities?
  4. There is a great deal of mis-information regarding the “benefits” that illegal immigrants get in America. Research what the qualifications and documentation requirements are for government benefits and how many of these benefits illegals can actually receive.
  5. What are the tactics used by employers who wish to hide the fact that they are employing illegals as member of their workforce?
  6. What is the status of illegal immigration into European countries, specifically among Muslims who are fleeing from the Middle East? How are these communities of immigrants surviving in these European countries?
  7. A very timely illegal immigration research paper might address the current American presidential candidates’ solutions for this problem. Which of them are realistic in terms of cost, and which appear to be only appeals to the base of their constituency?
  8. Given the current Syrian refugee crisis in Europe, what solutions appear to be the most reasonable and realistic?
